Karen Hoe – NELPPF Coordinator

I have 2 children, 17 years and 6 years old, the eldest my son, has severe complex health care needs and Autism, he is my inspiration and the reason why I’m now proactively involved in this vocation supporting other parents.
For the last twelve years I have been working both professionally and as a volunteer in the Health and Social care sector, supporting and working with families of children with Special Needs and Disabilities. The last 5 years I’ve been involved with North East Lincolnshire Parent Participation Forum.

I took over the role as co-ordinator for the Forum 3 years ago; my work is quite varied and no two days are the same which keeps me and my colleagues on our toes. I sit on board Strategic meetings within the Local Authority ensuring Parents voices are heard and respected. I Chair the Children’s Autism Board and help guide and direct parents to ensure they are informed, educated and empowered.

I am also a National Steering Group Representative for the National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF); this role takes me all over the country ensuring the issues that affect parent carers’, their families and especially their children are heard at a national level. Through this work I have involvement with NHS England, Contact a Family, Council for Disabled Children, Department of Education, British Academy of Disabled Children and many other organisations.

When I’m not working with the Forum, I also work for Contact a Family as the Yorkshire & Humber SEN Parent advisor part -time; as well as doing project work with a few other charities.

A few years ago, I took the leap to becoming a free-lance self-employed consultant which enables me to manage my own time and work projects around being a full time carer for my son, whilst also juggling the balance of all the hospital appointments and demands of a busy family with young children!
I have also been a Governor at a local Special Needs school for 6 years.
