Karen Hale Parent-Representative & Treasurer

I am the NELPPF representative on the SEND Strategy Group, the Local Offer Task Group and the Children and Families Bill Strategy Group, therefore I have up to date understanding and knowledge of all the new reform changes happening in September 2014. I also have regular contact with the North East Lincolnshire Down’s Syndrome Family Support Group for whom I was Chairperson for 3 years and I am a qualified Befriender.

I am a full time carer to my youngest son, Joseph, who is aged ten years old.

Having worked within the Local Authority for a number of years in an Admin role I trained and gained Certificates in Teaching ICT Applications. I then went onto gain my Certificate in Education and Assessors Award along with many in-house certificates. These included child protection, counselling and team-teach. These necessary qualifications helped me to become an Instructor & Support Worker staying within the Local Authority.

I began working with young people aged 14-16 with a diverse range of abilities and needs. Their problems were either within the home environment, school or had been permanently excluded from education. This also encompassedteenage mums and young offenders. My main duties were to build their skills in ICT, Admin and Life Skills. For example: cooking, health and hygiene, communication skills, parenting, sewing, drug/alcohol awareness, empowerment, which was accompanied by the Asdan, CLAIT and NVQ Qualifications. I enjoyed this role for many years prior to becoming a full-time Carer.
